BGC Scotland U17s Girls Triumph Over BGC Wales U17s in Entertaining Encounter at Park Avenue
Sunday 20th July, Park Avenue Stadium, Aberystwyth - KO: 2:15pm
In front of a lively crowd at Park Avenue Stadium in Aberystwyth, the U17s girls sides from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Scotland and Wales put on an entertaining display, with BGC Scotland coming away with a dominant 6-1 victory.
The match started brightly, with both teams showing energy and intent. Wales nearly took the lead early on when a dangerous effort drifted just wide of the post – a warning sign for the Scots.
However, it was Scotland who struck first. Melissa Regmi pounced on a misplaced pass, showing great anticipation and composure to go one-on-one with the Welsh keeper before calmly slotting home the opener.
Scotland doubled their lead soon after in spectacular fashion. Eva Noble stepped up to take a corner and stunned the crowd as her well-struck delivery curled directly into the net – a demonstration of brilliant technique.
Before the break, Nieve Thomson added a third. Showing excellent close control, she dragged the ball back to beat her marker and slotted confidently past the goalkeeper.
The first half closed with notable saves from both goalkeepers in what had been an open, end-to-end contest. But it was Scotland who went into the interval firmly in control at 3-0.
The second half saw Scotland pick up where they left off. Melissa Regmi grabbed her second of the afternoon after reacting quickly to a rebound shot saved by the Welsh goalkeeper after a free-kick from Mia Herd, lashing home the rebound to make it 4-0.
Wales found a breakthrough of their own, capitalising on a through ball and finishing calmly past the Scottish goalkeeper in a 1v1 to reduce the deficit.
But any hope of a Welsh comeback was dashed by a thunderous strike from Nieve Thomson. Her first-time effort from outside the box rattled the underside of the crossbar and crossed the line – a sensational goal that made it 5-1 and completed her brace.
Scotland continued to push forward with confidence and flair. A clever short corner routine saw Rebecca Lonie set the ball back to Eva Noble, whose whipped cross found Daisy Fraser. Her header crashed against the crossbar, narrowly missing what would have been a stunning first international goal.
The final goal of the afternoon came from a flowing team move involving Hadyn Coutts, Lexie Whyte, Daisy Fraser, and Rebecca Lonie. Lonie’s brilliant pass split the Welsh defence and found Lauryn Healy, who coolly converted to make it 6-1 – a deserved reward for her tireless performance.
After the match, Scotland captain Isla Davie reflected on the performance:
“I thought we played well start to finish. We worked well as a team and worked for each other throughout the whole game. There was good passages of play right from our back line through the midfield and in the front line. We fought hard against a strong Welsh side, encouraged by our coaches John Beatt and Ross James. We made sure we had a high press against the Welsh side and were able to pick up some loose passes. Overall proud of all the girls today!”
Coach Ross James said “The girls showed real hunger and desire for the full 90 minutes. There was lots of creativity and a big performance against a strong Welsh side. They executed the game plan from minute one.”
An exciting contest full of goals, creativity, and commitment ended in a well-earned 6-1 win for BGC Scotland – a result and performance to be proud of.
